What is TREF?
TREF, a non-profit organization established in 1983, represents San Diego's Trauma Care System, comprising passionate physicians, nurses, and community volunteers dedicated to advancing trauma care and injury prevention. Through safety education programs, professional training initiatives, expert presentations, and research support, TREF strives to enhance the quality of trauma care and promote public awareness of trauma prevention.
BENEFIT OF TRAUMA CENTER
Prior to 1984, an injured patient was taken to the closest Emergency Center. Through the six designated trauma centers, and coordinated care across the spectrum from pre-hospital to rehabilitation, survival rate of those residents and visitors who are traumatically injured has increased 25%. It is clear that if patients are evaluated and treated by trauma clinicians in a timely manner, their chances of surviving greatly increase.
Trauma Centers are verified by the American College of Surgeons (ACS) every 3 years to ensure each center is providing optimal care of trauma patients. The six designated Trauma Centers in San Diego County include:

• Palomar Medical Center
• Rady Children’s Hospital San Diego (Regional Pediatric Center)
• Scripps Memorial Hospital –La Jolla
• Scripps Mercy Hospital
• Sharp Memorial Hospital
• UC San Diego Health System (Regional Burn Center)
